Blacksmithing

Blacksmithing students learn a broad range of metalworking techniques with an emphasis on historical and contemporary design. Using both traditional and modern techniques, students learn to create custom tooling, traditional joinery, and modern fabrications. Student teams work with clients in design meetings and on site visits, as well as building and installing commissions. Interaction with professors and other students in a busy and productive environment is an important part of the program. The goal is to graduate a knowledgeable, free-thinking smith who can design, draw and produce fine metalwork.

Teaching these skills the way they have been taught for centuries, as well as having the opportunity to pass on knowledge and set an example for others just getting started in blacksmithing, have been among the many privileges I’ve experienced while teaching at ACBA. Bringing relevance to the traditional crafts and continuing to use them in a modern context is the fundamental goal of all the trades taught here.
